DEEP LISTENING
Cevera Yoon Gallery, 2026
Audio Installation
Materials: Memory chip, constructed wall, Audio Dataset from three months of gallery, two way mirror,
Can I collect your data and sell it back to you? Deep Listening explores the connection between data generation, possession, and stock profits. The installation uses the gallery space as a model for the US financial system, collecting and processing live data to create sonic and spatial compositions.
The work takes visitors’ voices and then uses live stock price data to create the sound score. In the first room, viewers’ voices are recorded. In the second room, these voices are combined with singing voices and then processed with the live stock price of Vertive Holdings, a manufacturing company specialized in developing data centers. The auditory dataset generated for the duration of the exhibition will be put on a chipnphysically embedded in a painting and made available for purchase.
The installation borrows its title from feminist composer Pauline Oliveros’ concept of Deep Listening. Oliveros positions listening as the basis of creativity and culture. “How you're listening,” she asserts, “is how you develop a culture, and how a community of people listens, is what creates their culture.” The work, while always recording but never listening, absorbs your voice into its dataset and invites you to consider: How do you listen? What do you listen for? When do you listen, and to whom? The project positions the New York Stock Exchange as an interface that mediates social relations. As viewers look through the screens in the wall, their vision and access to space is mediated by representations of the NYSE.
